CHAPTER 9

LOCK

“You’re crazy if you think that the Packers are going to do shit this year. Do you think Rogers is going to throw the ball to himself?”

I gave Brad the finger. “How much you want to bet we will get farther this year than your sorry ass team?”

Brad laughed and put his hand out for me to shake. “I got a hundred bucks on that.”

“Make it two, and you got yourself a bet.” I challenged.

His smile grew even more and we shook.

I had been sitting with my brother at Ice’s bar for over an hour, listening to him gripe about the latest shit crisis between him and his wife. I swear I wanted to smack both of them upside their heads. You would think that the shit these two have been through would have taught them something about communication. It hadn’t. And now, Brad was sitting here sulking instead of acting like he had some balls and handling his wife.

I scratched the back of my head, wondering how the fuck had I ended up in this situation.

I decided, after work, to grab a bite to eat and have a few beers before heading home for the night. This week was the week from hell, and I had been going on empty. We’ve had a few weird cases come our way. One specifically came to our desk the other day. It was a so-called kidnapping case.

Apparently, a wealthy constituent and friend of the mayor claimed that someone broke into his son’s house and took his wife and her kids. They beat his ass and left him for dead. We checked his security cameras and found nothing. We couldn’t corroborate his claim of being attacked, but he definitely looked like someone took a bat to his ass. We were still looking into it at the behest of the chief. We’ve also had a few cold cases with similar M.O.’s that we’re looking into. All the victims claim their wives or girlfriends, were taken in the dead of night, and disappeared without a trace.

When asked if the women simply left them, they all claimed that their wives would never do anything of the sort. They were in love, completely devoted. And again, we couldn’t find any evidence to support a kidnapping. No foul play. To us and to the world, it looked like these women just vanished.

On top of that, we’ve been waiting for the results from the DNA test on the mask we found a few blocks from Phoebe’s house. I was growing extremely impatient. Please understand that this wasn’t Hollywood. DNA testing didn’t happen overnight or in a couple of days. It could take at least a month if not more and that’s if the crime lab wasn’t backed up, which they were in this case.

My team continued to try and locate a lead on the whereabouts of Schindler, but so far, we had nothing. For most of the cases on our desks, we had nothing. No leads, no evidence to follow, nada, which was starting to get to me.
